Some people spell it Angular Cheilitis (like me) and others spell it Angular Cheilitis, either way it is the same fungal bacteria infection that was the curse of my life for 10 years. As I said in my earlier posts, I tried everything imaginable to relieve the sores that would develop on the corners of my mouth, & if you have ever had even just cracked lips, you can imagine how painful it is to have sores on the corners of the mouth.

I’d read everything possible on perleche, stomatitis, cracked lips, chapped lips, angular chelitis and angular cheilitis whatever you prefere to call it, and I had been to numerous doctors and dermatologists and all of a sudden i’m reading about how a woman literally came up with with a cure to chelitis (after much research it has to be said) and started the Foundation? I just could’nt believe it. Anyway as skeptical as I may have been, I was desperate to find a cure and the fact that all the money they collect goes to a great cause, eliminating angular chelitis from the planet…I made my donation and received what was to be the cure to my stomatitis!

Angular Stomatitis
is the same inflammatory sore or lesion at one or both corners of the mouth, as I said in my last post for some reason angular chelitis has a few different names attached to it depending on who you consult or ask. So the short answer to this question is a resounding NO!
A lot of the time people suffer from angular stomatitis due to a lack of vitamins, particularly vitamin B2 and by upping the amount of B2 you take you can help to relieve the symptoms but unfortunatley this is not a cure. One thing you have to remember is that this affliction of ours is a bacterial infection by nature and if left untreated, it will become infected by the fungus candida albicans, otherwise known as thrush. So it’s a pretty serious problem and not to be taken lightly.
Treatments For Angular Cheilitis – What Works?
This is a little harder to answer because there are a lot of people claiming a lot of different ‘cures’ for cheilitis, and I can only tell you what worked for me, and as everyone is different I can not guarantee 100% that what I used will have the same effect on you, but I can tell you what not to do, if you do a simple google search for angular chelitis or one of it’s other well known names like angular stomatitis, you will find everything from eating 10 oranges a day to literally pouring salt on the corners of the mouth to try to dry out the sore and in doing so draw out the infection, I don’t think I have to tell you that this method is complete rubbish, i’m embarassed to say I know it’s ‘complete rubbish’ because I tried it in desperation a few years ago .
What are the main causes of Angular Chelitis? Well there are many, it usually attacks the elderly or people, for what ever reason, have a low immune system but it can be contracted very easily from the cold when you get chapped lips or worse cracked lips, this can allow the infection in, it’s always important to keep your lips supple and moist with a chapstick or another type of lip treatment. For us ladies out there this is easy as we always have a lipstick in our handbag and most lipsticks these days have aloe vera or some other type of protectant in them. You might also be infected with chilitis due to heat, if your in a hot place and your dehydrated you lips will start to crack, your immune system will lower and the infection will creep in.
If you are using a medications that dry out the skin, like accutane, you need to consult with your doctor and try to get your medication changed to something that will not dry out the skin because this will only lead to a worsening of your angular stomatitis/chilitis or if your prone to getting the infection it will speed up the process and you will notice an onset of dryness at the corners of the mouth which will lead to you having to get some form of lip treatment before the stomatitis spreads and you end up with very sore cracked lips.
Just remember the latest studies show angular cheilitis is 90% of the time caused by a fungal infection but it can also be caused by a bacterial infection.

This scourge that millions of us worldwide suffer from, Angular Chelitis, is also know by a few other titles, Perleche, Cheilosis and Angular Stomatitis. It is often referred to as ‘the cracking of the corners of the mouth’ and can be quite painful. In a lot of cases such as my own, the corners of the mouth will crack and split, leading to a tearing of the skin and bleeding. Now, this happened to me a lot, I had what appeared to be a constant ‘cold sore’ which was very unattractive, sore and embarassing. I used to try all types of cold sore medications & facial moisturisers because I wanted to try and stop the sides of my mouth from drying out and i’m sure you have probably done the same, Right?

A major problem that can happen is when the sores get infected which then can lead to chapped lips or cracked lips, so not only do you have angular chelitis at the corners of the mouth but now it has spread from one side of the moth to the other and is extremly uncomfortable and painful, the bacteria is so resilient that it can combat any treatment that you try to use against it. One misconception I would like to clear up right now about chelitis is that a lot of people think it is contagious, well, it is’nt! But try telling that to your boyfriend (or girlfriend) when your sixteen years old And many more people believe once you have it that thats it, you have it for life, this is also not true, there are proper treatments out there, you just have to find the one thats right for you. Trust me you can do it, I suffered for 10 years before I found a treatment that finally worked for me and now I have not had any symptoms for over 2 years!
